Aeronautics

“The Wright brothers used to enjoy landing in the Basque Country. Later the Russians would land their planes on the Grande Plage and then the Basques would drag the planes to the Hotel Régina! During the First World War, the only squadron of seaplanes (Latécoère) was based in Bayonne. And then, Serge Dassault set up his business here. The rest is history…”

As the cradle of aeronautics, the Basque Country has developed an exceptionally skilled talent pool. The presence of emblematic companies such as Turbomeca, Safran and Dassault has made the local area the location of choice for the aeronautics sector. In all, there are 120 companies with over 100,000 employees.

A network of highly-qualified sub-contractors is available, particularly in the field of high-performance composite materials (employing about 2,000 people).

Certain Airbus, Boeing, Eurocopter, Mirage and Rafale aviation programs have been developed here, in the Basque Country.

Technocité is a 28,000m² site that is entirely dedicated to this branch of industry.

Just a 2-hour drive away, in Bordeaux, is the world-renowned business cluster, Aerospace Valley, whose purpose is to:

  • consolidate the leading role France plays in the world’s civil aviation sector (commercial planes and private business planes) and space sector;
  • drive its position of excellence in the field of embedded systems (electronic systems and independent information technology).
